Rensselaer is committed to providing opportunities for students in grades K–12, engaging them in programs that spark interest and build pathways to success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
We support this mission through a variety of year-round and summer pre-college pipeline initiatives, including Tutor Time (America Reads and America Counts), the RPI STEP Program, and the PREFACE Program. Additional opportunities include Summer@Rensselaer, Black Families Technology Awareness Day, and outreach activities led by the Engineering Ambassadors.
We also provide guidance and support to individual college-bound students, working closely with organizations across the country that are dedicated to mentoring and preparing their students for success in STEM fields.
For more information on these programs, contact Cynthia Smith, Program Director via smithc@rpi.edu or call (518) 276-3098.
History of the Program
Since 1978, with the launch of the first PREFACE program, Rensselaer has offered enriching experiences for students. The STEP Program began in 1986, and Tutor Time has inspired local K–12 students since 1995. Rensselaer has also hosted programs such as the NY State GEAR UP initiative, NYS5STEM, the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp @ RPI (2008–2017), Harlem Academy (2010–2018), and GE Girls (2012–2019).
The RPI Engineering Ambassadors program, part of a nationwide effort, continues to connect with students through dynamic STEM outreach. Summer@Rensselaer, established in 2008, provides additional STEM learning opportunities throughout the summer.
